In the mid 80's BMW wanted to win the touring car championship. They handed a stock e30 chassis to their M engineering department and said, "I don't care what needs to be done, make it win." The rules stated that any car entered into the series must have a minimum 500 cars sold to the public. To meet these requirements BMW basically threw in a stock interior, sent it to the dealer showrooms and called it an M3. It became the most wining race car of all time and the rest is history.
